The Estate of Sylvia Moy LLC and the Moy family are not supporting or endorsing the book It’s No Wonder at this time.
The Moy family provided extensive cooperation to the Author, including in-depth interviews, private family materials, and photographs that have never been publicly available. A substantial portion of the book’s content about Sylvia Moy is drawn directly from those contributions. In fact, a significant portion of the chapters, interviews, and photographs contained in the book originate directly from Moy family members.
We believe that 8 of the 19 chapters in the book are substan7ally based on interviews the Author had with Moy family members. That means there are 11 chapters in which Sylvia’s name is hardly men7oned, and have liCle to do with Sylvia Moy at all. In addi7on, on page 277 of the book 17 of the Author’s 31 interviews to write the book, are with Moy Family members. Plus, 20 of the 31 photos in the book are Moy family photos that have never been in the public domain.
The Author materially breached her contract with the Estate of Sylvia Moy LLC and used the content and informa7on contributed by the Moy family to write a book about our sister, whom she did not know and never met. She had numerous interviews with Motown members many of whom only agreed to interview with her because she also represented to them that the book would be an authorized biography fully supported by the Moy family.
As it currently stands, no one except the Author and the Publisher gets anything out of this book if it is successful. Does that make sense to anyone?
Despite the significant role the family played in shaping the historical narrative and providing foundational source material, the Estate has not been offered a fair and reasonable compensation arrangement reflecting both the volume and value of their contributions to the book, nor the value of the commercial use of Sylvia Moy’s name, image, likeness, and legacy.
Sylvia Moy was intentional and protective about how her story was told during her lifetime, and only agreed to par7cipate in projects focused more broadly than her Motown career. The Estate remains equally committed to following her example by safeguarding her legacy with integrity and respect.
Unless and until a fair and equitable agreement is reached with the Author and/or Publisher, the Estate of Sylvia Moy LLC will not promote, endorse, or participate in activities related to this publication.
